Wangduephodrang is located southeast of Thimphu over the renowned Dochula pass, which offers travelers breathtaking views of the Kingdom’s eastern Himalayan peaks. This region is distinct from others because of its remarkable diversity, which ranges from subtropical woodlands in the south to frigid, freezing regions in the north. With Wangchuck Centennial Park in the north and Jigme Dorji National Park in the southeast, the Wangdue Phodrang region is home to a wide range of plants and animals.
There are walks and treks with breathtaking views for those who enjoy being outside. In Wangdue Phodrang, the Phobjikha Valley, one of the few glacial valleys in the country, is a particularly lovely place to explore and is abundant in natural beauty.
Wangduephodrang Dzong
The most recognizable structure in the region was Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, which was constructed in 1638 and was perched on a ridge above the confluence of the rivers Dang Chhu and Punakha Chhu. During the fall Wangdue Phodrang Tsechu festival, guests were welcome. Unfortunately, a fire in 2012 entirely damaged it, and plans for repairs are expected to take until 2021. The tour operator could vouch for the Tsechu’s existing status as the site of the Army Training Center. Competitions may be held at the nearby archery ground once the Dzong reopens.
Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park

One of the biggest national parks in the country in terms of land size, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park is a shining example of serenity in the natural world.
It is located in Trongsa and parts of other districts, such as Wangdue Phodrang, and is a popular spot for birdwatching in Bhutan.
Phobjikha Valley
In Wangdue Phodrang, the bowl-shaped Phobjikha valley offers breathtaking views of long areas of green fields set against the western Black Mountains. It is home to the critically endangered black-necked crane, which winters here.
Phobjikha Valley, sometimes called Gangtey, is one of the few glacier valleys in the Kingdom of Bhutan.
The Phobjikha Valley is home to a number of hiking and trekking pathways with some of the most stunning views of the surrounding landscape, aside from a few cultural excursions to Lhakhangs and Goembas. A few villages are available for one to visit in order to see rural life. One may purchase handicrafts from nearby shops or intricately woven carpets from the renowned Gangtey factory. For hikers and bird watchers, it’s a haven, and if you enjoy taking pictures of the outdoors, it’s even better.
Gangtey Goemba, Phobjikha Valley
From the top of the hill where Gangtey Goemba is located, one can overlook the entire Phobjikha valley in all its splendor.
It is a very significant place linked with Guru Rinpoche since Saint Pema Lingpa, who was Guru Rinpoche’s reincarnation, brought Buddhism to the country and uncovered its richness.
It contains one of Bhutan’s largest halls as well. The black cranes are said to circle the monastery three times as they come and go. The two most well-known events are Gangtey Tsechu and the Black-Necked Crane Festival.
The Temple of Sha Radap
The Rada Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Sha Radap, is next to the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and houses the statue of the guardian god Sha Radap. It is dedicated to this deity.
People from the neighborhood commonly visit this temple to seek blessings and have their children named. To achieve their goals, one might gamble and pray for good fortune.
Gasleo and Nahee Village
The journey to Gasleo and Nahee villages, which are located on the western border of the Wangdue Phodrang area, takes around two hours. For those who wish to have a lovely picnic throughout the day and for those who want to truly appreciate rural Bhutanese life, this is the ideal option. The harvest festival is best experienced during the autumn harvest season.
